Seed viability varies depending on the species and the storage conditions. In general most varieties will remain viable for 2-3 years or longer. Some varieties may start to decline after a year these include lettuce, onion, capsicums, chillies, parsnips and passionfruit. For greatest storage life and to avoid losing seed or contaminating seed lots it is best to reseal packets. This can easily be done by using an iron or hair straighteners across the opening. Seed packets should then be stored in a cool, dark and dry place until you need them again. |
